Hi, I’m Ben.

I’ve been homebrewing on a regular basis since just after a certain election in 2016, minus a roughly year-long break when I moved to Vietnam to run a coffee shop and AirBnb with my wife. (Though I did manage to sneak in a batch while living in Da Nang.) I brew way more beer than I can drink, which means I’m always looking for new friends who will give my concoctions a home. If you happen to be in the Bend area, please hit me up for a growler fill or two.

I’ve also been baking steadily since 2019, largely focusing on rustic sourdough hearth loves, but also getting into Eastern European pan loaves, Japanese shokupan, cookies, and cakes. While I’ve mostly blogged about beer so far, I hope to add some strong baking-oriented content soon.

Beyond beer and bread, I like to ferment hot sauces, pickles, kimchi, and even my own miso paste. You can look forward to some posts about those, too.

In my day-to-day life, I’m an editor at Wirecutter, a New York Times Company. I love cameras, auto racing (including sim racing), and science fiction novels, movies, and TV.

You can find me on Instagram and Twitter. My brew dog and constant companion is Illa (eee-luh).
